‘Beer Bellied’ Dinosaur
Published: 14th Nov 2014
What most be the weirdiest looking dinosaur has been discovered in Mongolia. Originally a few bones were discovered in 1965 showing that thi dinosaur had long forlimbs – some 2.4metres. The dinosaur was named Deinocheirus mirificus — a mixture of Greek and Latin meaning 'unusual horrible hand'. More recent expeditions have recovered two more almost complete skeletons of this dinosaur from nearby.
The strange looking Deinocheirus had a large ‘beer belly’, a sail allong its back formed by blade-like projections from its spine and was about 11 meteres in length. The skull was longer than one metre, but without teeth, as it used a bony beak to nip at plants. Fish bones and scales were found in the stomach contents showing that Deinocheirus also consumed fish.
