New Short Stubby Armed Dinosaur Discovered
Published: 14th Jul 2016
T rex is no longer the only dinosaur to have strange short arms with two fingered claws. A new dinosaur has been found in the fossil rich area of northern Patagonia, South America, that has the same characteristic short stubby arms and two digits. However this new carnivorous dinosaur is unrealated to T rex as it comes from a different branch of the Theropod family tree - the allosaurids. This means that the short stubby arms and to finered claws must have evolved independently to T rex.
The dinosaur has been called Gualicho shinyae and was originally discovered in 2007. The name Gualicho derives from Gualichu - a spirit revered by Patagonia's Tehuelche people. It grew up to 9 metres in length and about 450kg in weight about the same as a bear.
